My wife and I decided to celebrate our weight loss and our active lifestyle by going for a two hour dolphin tour on jet skis. After checking the internet and calling a few places, I chose Action Water Sportz because, while they cost a little bit more than others, they were very helpful answering my questions on the phone. We were both a little nervous, having never been on jet skis before and, most certainly never in the open ocean! The place was fairly easy to find – especially since we love eating at Boardwalk Billy's! Our guide, Darius, was awesome – he explained the operation of the jet skis really well. As we started our trip, he constantly checked in with each operator in the group (four adults on four jet skis). I have no way to compare the equipment, but our jet skis worked well – we both hit 50+ mph easily and our life jackets fit well! He methodically helped us work up our skills and confidence before we entered the ocean at the Little River Inlet. We had about 10 minutes to play around in the fairly choppy ocean water. Having left a little late to meet the fishing boats that the dolphins follow, he offered a different excursion which we all agreed would be great: we went to Bird Island for a short walk and photos. Then we went 'trail skiing' – high speed skiing though beautiful scenery! By the time we got back to the docks, we felt like jet ski pros and cannot wait to go again! We've already promised each other we'll go, at least once, when we're in NMB again. We'll also be sure to ASK FOR DARIUS – he was great!

Other Rules Of The Road and Things You Should Know



A PWC or a Jet Ski is a high performance boat and your operation of it should reflect your level of experience. Here are some things to keep in mind:

• Avoid aggressive maneuvers. You will reduce the risk of loss of control, ejection and collision. Sharp turns or jumping waves can increase the risk of collision and cause back, spinal injury, paralysis, facial injuries and broken bones. The safe choice is not to jump wakes or waves. In most states the law prohibits jumping waves.


• Using the reverse function. If your jet ski has this function, do not use it to stop or slow down. Your forward momentum in combination with too rapid deceleration might cause loss of control and your ejection or the ejection of any passenger who might be onboard. The loss of momentum might also cause you to impact the handlebars and again cause injury. If the Jet Ski is equipped with a brake, you must brace yourself against the deceleration force to prevent moving forward on the watercraft and losing balance.


• You may be out on the water to avoid auto traffic and regain a sense of freedom. But there is traffic on the water too. Whether you are on the water with other water craft, larger boats or both, keep your focus and be aware at all times. Keep a safe distance away from people, objects and other water craft. Stand up often and scan your surroundings for other jet skis, boars, water skiers, tubers, swimmers, divers or obstructions in the water.


• Don't follow directly behind another watercraft or boats. Do not go close to others to spray or splash them with water.

Basic Boating Etiquette and Guidelines

You can't predict what others will do but you can be predictable to others on the water.  How? By doing what is expected and knowing basic boating etiquette and guidelines.

Sharp turns or maneuvers make it hard for others to avoid you or predict your movements and can make it impossible for them to avoid a collision with you.

Give sailboats under sail and large commercial fishing vessels the right of way. Stay to the right when approaching an on-coming craft so that it passes on your left side. When overtaking another boat, you can pass on the right or left, but stay clear. If you are about to cross paths with another boat, the craft on the right has the right of way.  Slow down to let the boat continue its course, then pass behind it. Even when you are sure you have the right of way, a good rule is to never insist on it. Always ride defensively, Why not be courteous and let the other boater pass?

If your course takes you across the path of another boat, make sure that boat does not obstruct your visibility.  Stay far enough behind it so you can see if other traffic is coming your way,

The local regulations regarding speed limits are put there for good reason.  Whether posted or not, follow the speed limit. Near shore, within 100 feet or in shallow water, go slow at an idle speed. Make no wake and observe posted no wake zones. It is always best to ride in main channels and avoid riding in shallow water.

Myrtle Beach Jet Ski Rental Safety Part 1

Welcome to what some people say is the most fun you can have on the water – riding a personal water craft.  It puts a smile on the faces of almost anyone who tries it, there is nothing like it.

Because there is nothing like it, we are going to take a few minutes to familiarize you with the operation of a personal water craft or Jet Ski. It's all about safety, the view, and passengers and others on the water.

Who is allowed to operate a Myrtle Beach Jet Ski?

Are you old enough? 16 years old is the recommend age by the Personal Watercraft Industry Association. However, local and state laws may vary. State laws may also require operator training or a boating safety course.

Action Water Sportz requires you to be 16 years old with a valid photo ID to drive alone. Any age can ride when accompanied by an adult. Parental consent is required if under age 18.

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your designated time for complete instructions on water safety and the operation of the Myrtle Beach Jet Ski. This time is NOT included in your paid adventure time.

Essential rules for Jet Ski safety

Know and commit to following these essential rules for safe operation of our personal watercraft. Use good judgment and put safety first.

• Never ride after consuming alcohol or drugs. Local DUI laws are enforced on the waterway.


• Be aware of and respect your environment. Stay away from waterfront properties, ecologically sensitive areas and endangered species. Action Water Sports offers the largest riding area on the Intercoastal's Waterway 10-20 miles of even ocean riding. We will instruct you are areas where you need to be cautious of your environment.


• Respect everyone on the water. There are lots of people sharing the waterway – boaters, skiers, surfers and swimmers. Please respect their rights to safety, access and use of the water.


• Adhere to all no-wake zones. There are areas on the waterway where you need to slow down and not cause a wake or wave. These areas are clearly marked and need to be observed.

What to wear when you ride

Anyone who operates or is a passenger on a jet ski must by law wear a US Coast Guard Approved life jacket suitable for personal watercraft use. An Action Water Sportz operator will assist you with properly fitting your lifejacket.

In addition to a safety jacket, you should wear protective wetsuit bottoms or clothing that offers equivalent protection such as shorts made from neoprene material. Regular swimwear won't protect you from the possibility of water being forced into body cavities. If you fall into the water and come near a jet nozzle, regular swimwear will not adequately protect against forceful water entry into the rectum or vagina.

Footwear, gloves and eye protection are also recommended for your safety
