THE EVOLUTION OF JET SKIS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

Jet skiing is a water sport that will provide you with the right amount of adrenaline. Jet skiing is a great way to see the sunset, discover hidden bays, and find beautiful beaches. Do you wonder how the jet ski has evolved? If yes, you’re in the right place. Continue reading to find out about the beginnings of jet skis, and all that lies between.

How it started

The early 1950s saw the first personal watercraft. Water scooters were created by motorcycle companies in an effort to move from the road to the water. The water scooters were originally made in Europe but didn’t get the traction that the makers expected.

Clayton Jacobsen was born in the 1960s. Clayton Jacobsen, an Australian, created his first prototype in 1965. A year later, he made another prototype. Bombardier Corporation reached him. Clayton created the original Sea-Doo in partnership with Bombardier. Sea-Doo did not stand the test of time. In 1970, it was finally scrapped.

Clayton did not give up. He continued to refine his stand-up model. After his Bombardier licensing agreement expired, he signed an agreement with Kawasaki to create a stand-up watercraft.

The Jet Ski

In 1973, Kawasaki launched the first Jet Ski model that was commercially successful. The Kawasaki JS400 Jet Ski was the name of this model, which sold more than 200,000 units. Jet skis were popular in coastal areas and vacation destinations at this time.

Top Brands

Bombardier Recreational Products manufactured Sea-Doo. Clayton Jacobson designed it and the 320cc engine powered it at 25 mph. Sea-Doo made a comeback in 1988 after it split from BPR. The popularity of the product’s pricing would see it gain popularity in later years. Kawasaki then came. Kawasaki is today one of the most expensive brands. Their jet skis are well-known for their speed and style. Today jet skis are used both for private and commercial purposes such as jet ski rentals.

In 1986, Yamaha introduced the WaveRunner 500. Honda introduced the AquTrax in 1986, which received a lot of attention.

Types of jet skis

The market for jet skis has seen tremendous growth. This has led to the development of many different types of jet skis to meet different needs. Nowadays, you don’t need to own one to ride one. There are plenty of jet ski rentals in Myrtle Beach. These are some of the most popular models:

Recreation Jet Skis

The most popular type of jet ski is the recreational one. These skis are well-known for their speed, agility, storage space, and impressive speed (up to 60 mph).

Luxury Jet Skis

These are perfect for those who want more comfort and power. These can travel up to 66 mph.

Rec-Lite Jet Skis

Rec-lite is a relatively new category and can only be purchased through Sea-Doo or Yamaha. They are slower than the standard rec-lite, but they have a top speed of 50 mph and are affordable.

Tow Sports Jet Skis

Tow sports jet skis were named for families that want to ski or wakeboard with their children. There are very few options.
